"Across the globe latitudes and longitudes intercross and create pinpoint destinations, yet destinations are not defined by concrete coordinates. They are instead defined by the intercrossing of culture, ideas, symbols and people. As they cross, they share and evolve; ever-changing and constantly dancing to a global rhythm. Come and indulge in this everyday intercrossing that defines our world."

Traveling the US for non-Americans: always getting harder

If you didn't already know, the Bush administration is currently encouraging (or should I say coercing) the EU governments to comply with new transatlantic travel security demands. One of those is armed US guards on all flights from Europe to the US on American owned airlines. To say that the Europeans are frustrated is an understatement; many of them already feel that travel to the US is harder than it used to be.

Since 9/11 travelers from Britain to America have decreased by 11%, despite a weak dollar that makes big American cities shopping meccas for anyone with pounds or euros in their pocket.

Are we pushing international travelers away because of our new standards? Read Ed Vulliamy's blog for the Guardian where he asks the question, America - more hassle than it's worth?

Getting a little more political

Beyond my cultural musings, I decided it was time to get a little more political with my writing -- or at least voice my opinion on things I find important. So I started writing for Rethos, an online "platform for change." You can check out my writing, as well as lots of other politically, culturally, socially, and environmentally sensitive issues at the link below.

Learning Atlantic Travel Rhythm by way of Gastronomy
In the middle of the Atlantic it was 5:45 pm and time again for the daily aperitif. The apéro as one says in French. Having left the tropical breezes of the French West Indies, the gigantic cargo ship Fort St. Georges, part of the Caribbean fleet of the French shipping company CMA-CGM, floated along calmly. It was day two of nine on a particularly serene journey from Guadeloupe to France; instead of whitecaps and seasickness there were gentle breezes and endless apéros.

Wine and Wild Blackberries
Spending an extensive amount of time in the Alsace region of France, my drink of choice has turned into white wine. Alsace is a region defined by its unique character: a little bit medieval, a little bit German, and a little bit more French. Architecture is characterized by the half-timber houses of the middle ages, and German specialties like bretzels and beer make their way onto Alsatian menus.

The Everyday Theatrics of Paris
My fixation with Paris is that, no matter how many times one has been there, every time you sit down at a café or walk down a street, you can be sure to see a magical Parisian moment in action. Drinking coffee at an outdoor terrace it not just about caffeine, it is like sitting in a theatre; the street becomes the stage and the Parisians the actors, letting the travel step into what could be scenes straight out of French film.
